Materials for the vapor barrier

There are several basic types of vapor barrier materials:

• polyethylene film 0.1 mm thick. This cheap method of vapor barrier has its significant disadvantage - it does not miss not only steam. In the room there is no movement of air, the walls "do not breathe".Some "experts" propose to perforate the film with improvised means, but in such cases it completely loses its vapor-insulating properties and the insulation remains unprotected again;
• special vapor barrier mastics. The application of mastic is also carried out before the finish. Their functionality also consists in air passing and vapor retention, protecting the heater;
• membrane film is a new generation in vapor barrier. It is a sufficient volume of air, while not letting steam, so that the heater in the wall pie is fully protected.

Steam insulation of wooden house walls

A house constructed of wood also requires close attention to the installation of a vapor barrier. The only case in which there is no need is to make a vapor barrier, when the house is built of rounded, glued timber, which is already dried in the proper way, has clear joints and grooves, which creates an absolute tightness, becoming a natural barrier to the couple.

The tree, which is supplied for building houses, dries very long. The period of complete drying is 5 years, especially in the first year after construction with wood, the main deformations occur:

• in the walls cracks are formed;
• walls are gradually seated;
• logs gradually change their shape;
• also changes the size of the logs.

• next layer will be a frame, usually it is made of a bar, which will be attached to the heater;
• insulation is protected by waterproofing;
• the last layer is the finish of the house.

Depending on the type of logs, the vapor barrier is fixed in different ways:

• on the round log, the vapor barrier must be mounted directly on the tree, the ventilation gap is not needed. This is done using an ordinary construction stapler;
• square and rectangular logs require the provision of ventilation clearance. To do this, the wood is packed with slats about 2.5 cm wide, the step between them is approximately 1 m. A vapor barrier layer is attached to these rails.

Steam insulation of wooden house walls from inside

With internal insulation of a wooden house, the building technology will look like this:

• crate width of up to 5 cm, which will provide ventilation clearance;
• layer of waterproofing film, which is attached to this crate. The gap between the film and the wall will ensure good ventilation;
• is then fastened to a metal profile;
• layer of insulation;
• vapor barrier film, lap-fastened and well sealed at the joints;
• finish, for example, plasterboard.

Steam insulation is necessary for the wooden house because the wood has excellent permeability of air and steam, accordingly, there is a big risk of damaging the insulation. To extend the service life of the insulation and walls, it is necessary to include the vapor barrier layer in the wall structure.

• membrane should only be installed from the inside of the insulation layer. This will ensure free breathing of the walls, ventilation of the house and the necessary microclimate;
• it is impossible to fix the vapor barrier layer on both sides. The outer layer should be protected from water, but not from steam. The vapor-insulating and internal side of the waterproofing film passes air and provides ventilation for the insulation, ensuring its drying and airing;
• if as insulation is used ecowool or polystyrene, it is considered that the vapor barrier is not needed, as these insulation have good resistance to moisture and condensation. This is true, but, by excluding the vapor barrier layer, the inner layer of the skin is already at risk. It is there that the steam stops and a layer of condensate falls on it, helping to destroy the house.
